Using the Lathe Editor

April 12th, 2007 by awesty

In this tutorial you will learn how to use the lathe editor in swift 3D to make a wine glass. I am using swift 3D 4.5, but as far as I know you can use any version.

First of all open Swift 3D and click on the Lathe Editor tab up the top.

Lathe Editor Tab

Now, using the pen tool draw something like what I have.

Drawing the wine glass

As you can see I have drawn half the glass. Make sure it is against the green line. When you go back into the scene editor swift 3D will spin that image that you just drew around the green line. So if you return back to the scene editor you should get something like this.

Rough Wine Glass

This may not be perfect, but you can see that it does look like a when glass. Now we will make it smooth in the advanced editor. Click on the advanced editor tab up the top, and click the button labeled ‘Edit Mesh’. Our wine glass has just been turned into an editable mesh. Now, right click on the wine glass and then select Subdivide > Smooth Exclude Border.

Subdivide

This will make our wine glass smoother. You can do this as many times as you want. The more times you do it, the smoother your object will be but this will increase the file size and the render time. I subdivided it twice, but once should be enough. Now enter scene editor. Click on Setup > Materials… A new window should open.

Gallery Setup

Select a category from the list and then click the ‘Add Material…’ button. Here are the settings I used.

Material Setup

Now if you drag this material from the material box down the bottom right of the screen onto the wine glass, it should look more like glass. If you render it, you should get something like this.

This is very good Awesty. Is there a free trial of Swift3D? I have SketchUp 6 to make 3D things, but Swift3D looks better.
