Learning HTML Part 2
This is part 2 of ‘Learning HTML’. If you haven’t taken part 1 it is recommended that you do. You can find it here.
In part 1 we made a very simple web page, which we will learn to improve in this part of the tutorial.
Paragraphs
You use paragraphs alot when writing, and you will use them just as much in HTML. I am using them right now to write this tutorial. To make a paragraph in HTML you just need to use the <p> tag (remeber you must close it with this tag</p>). Here is an example of how you might use it:
<html>
<head>
<title>I’m using Paragraphs!</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>This is a paragraph!</p>
<p>This is another one!</p>
</body>
</html>
If you saved that as a .html file and opened it in a web browser you would see that there is two paragraphs there.
Text Formatting
Your page will look better with paragraphs, but the text it still a bit plain. This is where these tags come in handy. There is alot of them, so I am not going to explain them to much. Here are the most common ones:
- <b>: Bold text
- <i>: Italic text
- <big>: Big text
- : Subscripted text
- : Superscripted text
- <em>: Emphasized text
- <small>: Small text
- <ins>: Inserted text
- <del>:
Deletedtext - <strong>: Strong text
Headers
So you’ve learnt how you can edit the content of your page, but what about the heading? This is where headers come in handy. They range from 1 to 6, 1 is the largest and 6 is the smallest.
- <h1>
- <h2>
- <h3>
- <h4>
- <h5>
- <h6>
Header 1
Header 2
Header 3
Header 4
Header 5
Header 6
Line Breaks
The <br /> tag is used for line breaks. Unlike most other tags, it doesn’t have a closing tag. But you may have noticed it has a slash in it.
<html>
<head>
<title>I am using Line Breaks!</title>
<head>
<body>
This is a line<br />This is another<br />So is<br />this
<body>
<html>
If you saved that as a .html document it would look like this:
This is a line
This is another
So is
this
Horizontal Rules
You can use the <hr /> tag to seperate parts of your page with a horizontal rule. Like the line break tag it doesn’t have a closing tag.
<html>
<head>
<title>I am using Horizontal Rules!</title>
<head>
<body>
This is part of the page<hr />Is seperated from this part of the page!
<body>
<html>
A horizontal rule looks like this:
Well, that is the end of Part 2 of this tutorial. Come back soon for part 3 where you will learn about tables and how they can help you set up your page

Ouch, don’t do tables, go straight to css only divs. Much easier to understand. A simple two column site with a header and footer is only five divs compared to all those nasty rows and cells.
Yes, but CSS and divs are more advanced than tables, anyone can understand tables.
I am going to get around to doing a CSS one a bit later when I have finished the HTML ones.
Wow this is cool, is there more?
Well, hopefully. I am trying to write some more flash tutorials, but then I should make a HTML part 3.
i want more flash tutorial

If you have firefox just go to the index page and you should see a orangre square with whites lines in it in the address bar. Just click on it and hit ok and it will show you the latest posts on the site when you click on it.
where part 3 i cant wait any more hurry plz
Sorry, but these things take time. I have been really busy the past few days, and it’s not something you can do in your spare time. I will do it on the weekend.
hi, i just need to insert a picture in my web page… how is that possible? how can i do it?
[img src=\\\”Image location\\\”]
With angle brackets though.
Awesty if you ever get to it you really should add some more to your HTML tutorials too.. or stop doing tuts for a while and learn to clone yourself a few times.. that would be best for all of us, who nag and nag for new juicy hunks of tutorials to sink our scripting fingers into.
^.^
I thing I hate about HTML tutorials is that there is so much to teach, and you can’t just teach something cool like how to make a game (not that you can do that with HTML), you have to teach all the basic stuff first.
Did you make tis website using HTML?
without looking at source… comments: javascript, links: HTML/CSS no tables, just divs, just a guess
I didn’t make this site. I used a blog software called wordpress. It makes everything easy.
Btw jake, you are almost right. Every thing is xhtml/css. There is alot of php involved though. Comments are AJAX(pretty much javascript)/PHP/mySQL.
You should also get around to javascript and css tutorials. Btw, how much of this site could you make?
Wow good steps this is the first time I uderstood something like HTML stuff
When all the steps are done I’ll be with my site
I am new to HTML. This is GOOD. Continue the good work.
I’m a Bit Of An Advanced Html Creator But There Are Two Things In My Brain I’m Missing, Pop Up Boxes -Forgotten How And Another Is Advanced Links, If You Could Post These It Would Be Great,
-1 year if html experience and two generations
@Brett: Pop up boxes are done with the alert() function (which is javascript). Google it to find out more.

Learning HTML Parts 1 & 2 had been very informative for newbies like me. Seriously thirsty for the Part 3. Thanks a million.
I may not go through with making part 3. HTML tutorials are VERY boring to make. >_<;
