Cool Glow Effect in Flash
Someone has requested this tutorial, so I thought I will do it. It will teach you how to make a simple but cool glow effect like the one below. I am using flash 8, which you will need since this tutorial requires filters.

First of all, make some text or something. As you can see above I made some text that reads ‘GLOW’. Once you have done that, make it a MC (MovieClip), not a graphic since you cant apply filters to graphics, and call it whatever you want.
Now, in the filters panel (Windows>Properties>Filters) click on the little plus sign and choose the ‘Glow’ filter.
Now mess around with the settings until you get something you like. Here is what I used for the text.
Now to get the effect we are looking for, look over to the right of the filters panel. You should see two check boxes. Make sure the one labeled ‘Knockout’ is checked. Now your text should look something like mine. For the red lines in the background, I got the paint brush and scribbled on it. Then followed the same steps as above but with different settings. It actually has two different glow filters applied to it so the middle of the line isn’t completely white.
Short, I know. But this effect can work well when used right.

crapp…i’m the one who requested it, and i can’t even use it. (I only have flash basic
dont buy flash basic! for about 100 $ more you get 3x the program! well, bummer for you
:( :(. lucky for you, i used to use flash mx! it waaay old and didn’t have filters…but now i have flash 8 so i never use this anymore…anyway; to make a glowish thingy without filters, here is what you do:
draw the desired object or type the text (if its text then press ctrl+B until the text is just a shape).
then you need to duplicate that shape to a lower layer, copy it and then make a new layer below it and press ctrl+shift+V to paste in place.
change its color to the color of your glow and you can play with the alpha if you want.
then lock and hide the above layer and select the glow layer, then go to Modify > Shape > soften fill edges
play with the settings a bit and then press ok. (i recommend expand, 20 steps, and 20 distance)
now unhide the top layer and viola!
wow that messed up my comment. i meant to put. Flash 8 Basic edition with no smiley face.
aw man, i can’t use it either. i only have flash 6 it seems. i dont see any glow effect. it looks cool though.
Yay, i can use it (and i have used it in the past, i like to experiment =)
Nice tut anyway
Woah… I thought you could use filters in flash 8 basic. :\
I guess this tutorial is restricted to only a few people then.
hey, i know 100% about glow and gradient glow filters… I’ve been using them since i was 11 years old… but thanxs for the tute anyway… (it gave me great ideas)

Hey awesty how come you say sniper_rifle_048 AT hotmail DOT com instead of
sniper_rifle_048@hotmail.com
Well I do it so bots dont get my email and spam my inbox. But now that you have posted it that kind of defeats the purpose. TT_TT
Awesty I did add you some time ago, but I didn’t have the chance to ask you what I want to. Do you not use that e-mail anymore? Please send me an e-mail for me to understand the matter.
Thanks.
Sorry. I rarely go on MSN.
I am checking me emails at the moment. I havent check them for ages since my inbox has 350+ new messages TT_TT.
No problem. I don’t even have that doubt anymore. Keep up the good work.
